Are You Selling Online Yet? Here’s how to do it. -The Scott Sanfilippo Interview

Posted on Jan 20, 2009 - 8:10 AM PST

Scott Sanfilippo has been selling online since 1994, when he created FerretStore.com. Today he runs Solid Cactus, a company he co-founded to help businesses launch ecommerce sites.

Here are some of his tips to help you sell online:

Find your niche - Instead of trying to please all pet owners, Scott's first online store focused on Ferret supplies. Being niche-oriented, helped him beat better-funded companies like Pets.com.

Be the expert - Once you find your niche, establish yourself as the expert by helping people on message boards, blogging about it and going to conferences.

Ask your grandmother - Because you're an expert in your field, you might lose touch with how the average person looks for and interacts with your business. Sit down with your grandmother and ask her to find what you're selling online. Look at how she searches--then go back to the office and work on getting yourself into those search results. And watch how she uses your site--and improve your user experience based on what you learn.

  • great interview! Through this interview I realized how important PPC is to the overall success of an online shop.
  • Awesome Interview! I'm gonna try to combine that with Chris Winfield's strategies. But it also makes me rethink about my site. I was thinking about adding books category next, now I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not.

I am very new at adwords and I really don't have the spare mulah to burn learning/testing adwords so I'm gonna try to max out my personal social effort first, then go into PPC later.
