The 37Signals Story
This post was written by Mike Gioia, who heard I was thinking of doing posts about upcoming guests and submitted this one to get me started. (Thanks Mike!)
37signals originally started in 1999 as a web design firm and has since transitioned into a web-based software company. Jason is also a contributor to Signals vs. Noise, a blog expressing 37Signals views on “design, business, experience, simplicity, the web, and culture” which currently has over 100,000 readers a day.
In 2004 their first product “Basecamp” was created by David Heinemeier Hansson as a simple project management tool. During this process the origins of Ruby on Rails is developed.
Originally made to solve their own problem, Basecamp now has over 3,000,000 users with over 2,800,000 projects created.
Since then 37signals has released multiple products such as Backpack, Highrise, and Campfire. Other creations include a Job board, Ta-da list, Writeboard, Sortfolio, and two books. Jason co-authored “Getting Real” a book describing 37signals philosophies on design, programming, and marketing of web-applications. In 2009 REWORK was released, a book about 37signals views on business.
As a sought after speaker, Jason has talked about business, design, and software at conferences around the world. 37signals is based in Chicago, Illinois and has a single investor, Jeff Bezos.
Jason Fried believes in simplicity.
