This guide is based on Mixergy’s interview with Gabriel Machuret.

After quitting his job as a scuba diving instructor when his wife was expecting their second child, Gabriel Machuret built a successful search engine optimization (SEO) business and made an extra $100,000 in a year. It was all done using strategies he learned from Mixergy, so we invited him to teach you how to do it.

Gabriel is an SEO consultant whose website is InternetNinja.com.au.

Here are the actionable highlights from the interview.

1. Delegate work to outsourcers to allow you to make the most of limited time

Gabriel hired webmasters and graphic designers in the Philippines, and he gave them a handbook and a program for sharing work files.

Take Action:
Hire people to work remotely and give them instructions and tools to communicate with each other.

2. Tell your story to stand out and gain trust

Gabriel was embarrassed by his Colombian accent, but when he told customers where he came from they were supportive and he learned that some of them had ties to Colombia too.

Take Action:
Tell people who you are and how you got started, even if it means revealing something that you feel is an inadequacy.

3. Use time management tools to get rid of distractions and increase productivity

Gabriel realized that poor time management was making him miss weekend swimming with his family, and he decided to log in to Time Doctor each morning and give himself assignments.

Take Action:
Use programs like Time Doctor to write to-do lists, set reminders, and track how you spend your time.

4. Bounce ideas off a partner to get a second opinion

Gabriel was eager to sell hemorrhoid creams after he watched an interview about affiliate marketing, but his wife convinced him that it would be wiser to keep building his SEO brand.

Take Action:
When you come across an idea that looks exciting, discuss it with your spouse or a friend before taking action.

5. Automate unpleasant tasks so you can concentrate on the work you enjoy

Gabriel was so uncomfortable sending invoices that he would apologize to his customers, so now he has software send the invoices automatically.

Take Action:
See if you’re repeatedly doing any unpleasant tasks, and set up an automated process to take over those chores.

6. Screen prospects to avoid nightmare customers

Gabriel asked someone if she had worked with SEO companies in the past, and he learned that she had worked with the top SEO companies in the country and had sued them all.

Take Action:
Ask potential customers to answer pre-qualification questions about their businesses and about why they want to work with you.
