I wanted to have Mahbod Moghadam on Mixergy because, as one of the founders of Genius, he kept stirring things up and getting a lot of attention for a site that could otherwise be considered a boring annotation company.

I wanted to understand how he got so much attention for that startup. I failed. I’m disappointed. I’ve been fascinated by him for years.

I’m still publishing the interview. I don’t like to hide my mistakes. I think people who only show off when they’re great and hide all their failures are giving you a false ideal to live up to.

Mahbod Moghadam is the co-founder of Genius, the annotation company that was previously called Rap Genius. He currently works full-time on Everipedia.

Andrew: Hey, everyone. I’m Andrew. I won’t go through the whole intro. What I want to do is kind of an untraditional interview here and just start off by being open with my guest and see where the interview goes. You’re hearing me okay now?

Mahbod: Yeah.

Andrew: Cool. I’ll be honest with you. We started the interview 20 minutes late and it’s not because I had any technical issues, it’s because I’ve just been researching you trying to figure out how to do this interview, how to do it right. That was my big challenge. It never takes me that much longer to do prep.

Mahbod: Oh dear.

Andrew: Why don’t we start off by–I’ll explain the problem. But why don’t we start off by introducing you. How do you pronounce your name? Your cofounder was on here. He said he struggled with it.

Mahbod: Wow.

Andrew: Here’s what I got, Mahbod.

Mahbod: Yeah. Well, you do it perfectly....
